Loren Taylor

Director of Bands

Ms. Loren Taylor is the Director of Bands at Utley Middle School in Rockwall, TX.  She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor Degree in Music with emphasis in instrumental education as well as a Flute Performance Certificate.  At USC, Ms. Taylor was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Campus Orchestra, and the Mighty Sound of the Southeast.  During her membership in the USC Wind Ensemble, Ms. Taylor had the unique opportunity to perform in a 10-day concert tour in China.

Prior to her time at Utley Middle School, Ms. Taylor taught at Flores Middle School in Uvalde, TX.  Under her direction, the program received Sweepstakes awards at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest and multiple students placed in the Region 11 South Texas Honor Band. In 2016, Ms. Taylor became the assistant band director at Brown Middle School in Forney, TX.  The Brown Middle School Symphonic Band received Division 1 Ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest.

Beyond teaching, Ms. Taylor is also an active flute performer. Her past memberships include the Palmetto Concert Band, Carolina Wind Symphony, and the Heart of Texas Concert Band.  As a member of the Heart of Texas Concert Band, Ms. Taylor also served on the executive board as the band secretary.  Presently, Ms. Taylor performs with the Plano Community Band and serves as coordinator for the Forney Community Band.

Ms. Taylor’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Sigma Alpha Iota.

Outside of school and performing, Ms. Taylor enjoys spending time in the garden, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.

Preston Beaty

Assistant Band Director

Mr. Beaty is from Flower Mound, and graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in music education. While at WTAMU, Mr. Beaty was a drill instructor for three years in the Buffalo Marching Band, taught private trumpet lessons in the Canyon/Amarillo area, and studied trumpet under Dr. William Takacs. He has participated in ensembles that performed at the TMEA convention in San Antonio and as semi-finalists at the National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University in Virginia.

 

Before coming to Rockwall, Mr. Beaty was the assistant band director at Scoggins and Maus Middle Schools in Frisco, TX, where both band programs earned multiple Division 1 ratings at UIL with all ensembles. Both programs also had many students place into all five of the Region 24 All-Region Bands.

Mr. Beaty has previously played trumpet with the Frisco Community Band. He is an alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and is an active member of Texas Music Educators Association.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Beaty enjoys useless movie trivia, having Nerf gun battles, and riding bikes with his wife, Erin, who is a music therapist in Frisco ISD.

Russell Lancaster

Percussion Director – Rockwall

Russell Lancaster is the Percussion Coordinator for the Rockwall High School feeder pattern in Rockwall, TX. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music from Northwestern State University of Louisiana where he studied percussion extensively with Mr. Kenneth Green and obtained his teaching certification through the direction and guidance of Dr. Greg Handel and Dr. Sharon Joy.

While at Northwestern State University, Mr. Lancaster served as a Graduate Assistant of Percussion in 2013 and 2014. During his tenure, he instructed and arranged music for the Spirit of Northwestern Drumline and Front Ensemble, assisted with major/minor percussion lessons, and conducted the NSU Percussion Ensemble and Marimba Band. He was also one of the founding members of the NSU Percussion Society, and he coordinated the establishment of an elementary percussion program for the Northwestern State University Elementary Lab School.

Mr. Lancaster was involved with numerous performing ensembles at Northwestern State University. He marched four years with the nationally recognized Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band under the direction of Dr. Jeff Mathews, Mr. Kevin Richardson, Mr. Steve McKeithen, and Mr. Bill Brent. He was also actively involved with the NSU Wind Symphony, NSU Percussion Ensemble, Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, Rapides Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Combo, and the NSU Jazz Orchestra.

Through Mr. Lancaster’s participation with the NSU Percussion Studio and Jazz Orchestra, he had the opportunity to learn from renowned percussionists and musicians such as Bret Kuhn, Thom Hannum, John Lane, Mark Reilly, John Brennan, Johnny Lee Lane, Brett Dietz, Ed Smith, Ingrid Jensen, Rodney Whitaker, Mike Vax, Steve Fisher, Johnny Vidacovich, and Zoro.

Mr. Lancaster is currently in his third year of working with the Rockwall High School Band and Percussion Studio. During his time at Rockwall High School, he has cultivated the percussion program into one of the most competitive studios in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He has placed numerous students into TMEA All-Region Bands, All-State Bands, and has had several students obtain 1st division ratings in UIL Solo & Ensemble Contests. Mr. Lancaster is an active clinician and adjudicator for various schools in the DFW area, a member of the Texas Music Educator’s Association, Percussive Arts Society, the National Association for Music Education, and is endorsed by Innovative Percussion.

Kenneth “Rod” Kosterman

Percussion Director – Rockwall-Heath

Rod Kosterman began his first year as the Percussion Director at Rockwall-Heath High School in the Summer of 2016. He is also the Front Ensemble Designer and Coordinator for Vigilantes Indoor Percussion.

In 2010, Rod graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Percussion Performance from UNT and was awarded Outstanding Undergraduate in percussion. Later that year, Rod was the recipient of Indiana University’s Artistic Excellence Scholarship. He served as the department’s Graduate Assistant in 2011-12.

Rod’s composition for marimba and cello, in nebulous suspension held, won third prize in the 2010 PAS Composition Contest and is now published by Mostly Marimba. Song for Monica, a vibraphone solo, is available through Tapspace publications and is on the Ohio and Texas Prescribed Music Lists for Solo & Ensemble.

From 2011 through 2016, Rod was on the front ensemble staff for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. He also served as Education Program Director for the Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble in 2015.

Rod is a proud endorser of Vic Firth sticks and mallets, Remo drum heads, as well as Mapex and Majestic marching percussion instruments.
